About the trial
Earn rewards when you allow EnergyAustralia to install a device that remotely manages your split system, pool pump or hot water unit so that it is not using electricity during a PowerResponse event.
Being part of a trial that will change the way we use energy as a community, is as easy as installing a Smart Isolator Switch.
Be rewarded with EnergyAustralia bill credits when you agree to take part in the Isolator Switch Trial.
To take part in the trial, your unit needs to have the EnergyAustralia's Smart Isolator Switch installed. The technology in this device enables it to remotely switch your unit to different event settings that will reduce the energy consumption, when a Demand Response Event begins. This means less strain on the grid and credits on your bill.
You'll also have access to a personalised portal so that you can keep an eye on just how much energy your unit is using.
Be rewarded
- Free device and installation valued at $600.
- $20 reward each time you allow EnergyAustralia to temporarily manage your unit during a PowerResponse event.
- And, access to a portal to view your unit’s energy usage.
Rewards will be credited to your EnergyAustralia bill.
There will be up to 10 events, for the duration of the trial, which ends on 1 December 2020.
Getting involved is simple
Please respond to the email you received with the required details and our installers will be in touch.
Once installed, all you need to do is register on the portal and you’re ready to go.
See full terms and conditions. Please note, if there is someone on life support in your household, you are unable to participate.
More about EnergyAustralia's Isolator Switch Trial
Unfortunately, you cannot be part of both programs. Once you agree to the Terms and Conditions of the Isolator Switch Trial, you will be transferred from Behavioural Demand Response, to the Isolator Switch Trial. You will receive a cancellation email for Behavioural Demand Response, and you will receive another welcome email for the Isolator Switch Trial.
However, this trial is still part of the PowerResponse program and you can still earn rewards for helping the grid.
Homeowners in Victoria who are EnergyAustralia customers. There can’t be anyone in the house with specific health needs where their health or safety could be adversely affected by electricity supply changes or curtailment, including anyone using a life support system.
Your home will need to be single phase, with either an Air-Conditioner, Electric Hot Water Unit or a Pool Pump in your home which an isolator switch can be connected to.
Fill out the expression of interest form and our installers will contact you to arrange installation.
Once installed, all you need to do is register your Isolator Switch on the portal with the details from your installer, and you’re ready to go.
When your unit is on during an event, you’ll participate automatically as your Smart Isolator Switch will temporarily turn your unit to the event settings that will reduce its energy consumption.
If you do not wish to take part, you can opt out through SMS. If your unit is not turned on when an event is called, you will not be required to participate.
You’ll receive credits on your EnergyAustralia bill, it can take up to 15 days for the credit to appear on your account.
Device and Installation
Typically a Split System, Electric Hot Water Unit or Pool Pump, in a single phase home, that requires a 15amp isolation switch would be eligible.
Once registered an installer will be in contact to ensure you are eligible.
W100 x D100 X H290.
It’s installed outside next to your split system, pool pump or hot water unit.
No you don’t, but you will need to register on the dashboard, that you can access from a desktop or smart phone where you will be able to see the amount of energy your unit is using at any given time.
The switch runs on a 3G connection, not a home WiFi connection, therefore there is no extra cost to you.
Around 30 to 45 minutes. The installer may need to temporarily shut down the supply of power to your home for a short period of time to install the device safely.
It is advised that you are home during the installation of the Smart Isolation Switch so that the installer can set up the device and ensure you are getting all the benefits and full functionality.
We have specifically trained installers to ensure that the device is installed correctly and safely.
The switch will no longer be connected to the 3G network, EnergyAustralia will not be remotely accessing the switch or your unit, and the usage data will no longer be available.
It will however still function as a legally required isolator switch for your unit which you can continue to use.
Demand Response
In times of high demand, power supply reserves in Australia’s National Electricity Market (NEM) sometimes reach critically low levels. demand response involves rewarding customers who choose to reduce their power consumption, switch to backup generation or dispatch their energy storage for short periods when electricity reserves are predicted to reach these critically low levels.
The simple idea behind demand response is that rather than pay to increase how much capacity is available in the electricity grid (such as upgrading transmission networks) for these rare instances when the grid is under pressure, we encourage customers to reduce the amount of electricity they use during times of need and reward them for the changes they make. Reducing demand at peak times will also assist in the ability to transition more generation to renewable energy sources such as solar and wind.
As a participant, you can help to reduce the stress on the grid during high energy usage times, receive rewards for changing your energy consumption behaviour and find new ways to reduce your energy bills.
If you change retailers for your electricity supply, you will no longer be eligible to participate in EnergyAustralia’s Isolator Switch Trial program and you will need to contact us so we can remove you from the program.
Simply email arenatrial@energyaustralia.com.au and we’ll remove you from the program.
Events and Rewards
We'll let you know about an upcoming event by SMS, you can opt out via SMS and it's always up to you whether you participate or not.
We'll always confirm the start of an event with an SMS. We'll also send you an SMS at the end of the event, letting you know that it's finished.
Your reward will appear as a credit on your next EnergyAustralia bill and can take up to 15 days to appear on your account.
Please consider your own personal safety and those in your care before deciding to participate in an event and before undertaking any energy reduction activities.
Always ask yourself; could the health or safety of any member of your household be adversely affected by switching off or turning down essential appliances or devices?
Safety is our absolute priority, so if there is anyone in your household who depends on life support, you are ineligible for the trial.
You are classified as being life support dependent if you or anyone in your household depend on any of the following equipment:
- Oxygen concentrator
- Intermittent peritoneal dialysis machine
- Kidney dialysis machine
- Chronic positive airways pressure respirator
- Crigler najjar syndrome phototherapy equipment
- Ventilator for life support
- Any other equipment (whether fuelled by electricity or gas) that a registered medical practitioner certifies is required for life support, or a medical condition which requires continued supply of gas.
If your unit is on during the event, and you are not home, EnergyAustralia will still be able to temporarily adjust your settings unless you opt out before the event.
No, participation is voluntary. If you do not wish to participate, you can opt out via SMS.
There are no penalties if you don’t participate in an event. However, if you choose to opt out, you will not receive any rewards for that particular event.
Isolator Switch Demand Response events will only ever be held between 8am and 10pm.
There isn’t a fixed number of events. However, we won’t ask you to participate in more than 10 events for the duration of the trial.
Events will be between 30 mins and 4 hours in duration. We’ll let you know prior to the event starting.
In some cases, your unit may be turned off completely during the event period, in others it may be switched to Economy Mode. However, it will return to its normal settings after the event is finished.
Only used in a split system, typically Economy Mode allows the room temperature to rise or fall by a degree or two, compared to your desired temperature, over a few hours, before trying to heat or cool the room again.
Unfortunately no, the settings that EnergyAustralia is are trialling cannot be adjusted.
Follow the instructions provided by the installer to access the dashboard, and use the details that you originally signed up with to sign in.
