What is a solar feed-in tariff?
A feed-in tariff (FiT) is a credit you can receive for any unused electricity sent back to the grid. Also known as a buy-back rate, it’s usually a set rate per kilowatt hour paid as a credit on your bills. If you’re an eligible customer with solar generation, you can be paid a solar FiT with any of our electricity plans, though your solar rates and your electricity rates have separate terms and conditions. If a solar rate changes, we’ll let you know before you’re affected.
Please note that there are different terms and conditions for each state.

Call 1800 818 378 to add a feed-in tariff to your plan. Note, there are eligibility criteria to have a FiT added to your account.
Your solar FiT is an add-on to your plan, which means the rates are not fixed. This is explained in EnergyAustralia’s ‘Terms and Conditions’ and in the ‘Welcome Pack’ that is either posted or emailed out to you once you have signed up to one of our plans.
There are two main types of rebates that customers with solar power can be eligible for:
Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs)
STCs are electronic certificates created when eligible solar power systems or solar water heaters are installed.
Government rebates
Governments may offer rebates to support solar panel installations. To find out more, check out your state government website to see if there are any government rebates currently available.
The premium feed-in tariff (PFiT) scheme was a Victorian Government program that started in 2009 as an initiative to encourage take up of rooftop solar systems. The government announced that the scheme will end on 1 November 2024 and customers will no longer receive the premium feed-in tariff of 60c/kWh.
A letter or email notification has been sent to our customers with PFiT from mid-October.
What FiT will I receive?
If you were receiving a retailer FiT of 6c/kWh, you'll continue to receive this, as long as you're on your current plan. This is higher than the 3.3c/kWh minimum regulated by the ESC that applies to other plans. If you switch plans, you’ll receive the minimum regulated retailer FiT of 3.3c/kWh.
Can I upgrade my rooftop solar?
Yes you can. The PFiT scheme had restrictions on the size of your rooftop solar system, this restriction won’t apply from 2 November 2024 and you’ll be able to upgrade your solar.
My bill is in credit, what will a lower FiT buyback rate mean?
Any credit balance on your account will be used towards future bills until your credit balance has been used. The reduced FiT solar buyback rate might not cover usage and supply charge costs on your future bills and your bill will show an amount to be paid.
If you find you’re having difficulty paying your energy bills, please contact us as early as possible so we can go over what we can do to help. We have payment options such as setting up a personalised payment plan, or a payment extension.
Maximise your solar with Solar Max
Our higher than standard FiT applies for the first 12 kWh average solar export per day across your billing period, after which our standard FiT rate will apply to the balance of solar export.
