Employees at EnergyAustralia’s Yallourn power station have solved the mystery of a noise Yallourn North locals described as “like a screaming dragon”.

EnergyAustralia’s Head of Yallourn, Greg McIntyre, said residents told them about the noise at a public meeting.

“Neighbours said they had noticed a strange noise coming from the northern end of the Yallourn site.  They described it as occasional, loud, and sounding like a screaming dragon.

“In response we conducted noise monitoring on the northern boundary.  This showed that the sound was coming from the relatively new saline water basin works, critical to our operations. It can be seen from Brown Coal Mine Road (C103) just to the east of the Yallourn North township.

“We then sought expert advice and had four silencer units designed and installed on the offending equipment in October and November 2022.

“I’m happy to say the dragon screams no more.

“We’re pleased that we were able to work together with the local community to fix this issue.  It’s important to us to be a good neighbour and we encourage the local community to contact us on 1800 574 947 if ever they have questions or concerns about our operations.”
